چکیده

This is an example for the application of the LCAO method to bandstructure calculation. We will apply this method to a two-dimensional sheet of graphite, called graphene, and carbon nanotubes, which are slices of graphene rolled into a seamless cylinder. Graphene and carbon nanotubes (CN) have peculiar electronic properties, which can be derived by the LCAO method (also called tight-binding method).

Water on graphene surfaces.

In this paper, we summarize the main results obtained in our group about the behavior of water confined inside or close to different graphene surfaces by means of molecular dynamics simulations. These include the inside and outside of carbon nanotubes, and the confinement inside a slit pore or a single graphene sheet. We paid special attention to some thermodynamical (binding energies), structu...

Transforming graphene nanoribbons into nanotubes by use of point defects.

Using molecular dynamics simulations with semi-empirical potentials, we demonstrate a method to fabricate carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), by periodically inserting appropriate structural defects into the GNR crystal structure. We have found that various defect types initiate the bending of GNRs and eventually lead to the formation of CNTs. All kinds of carbon nanotubes...

Folding of graphene slit like pore walls--a simple method of improving CO2 separation from mixtures with CH4 or N2.

We report for the first time a detailed procedure for creating a simulation model of energetically stable, folded graphene-like pores and simulation results of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation using these structures. We show that folding of graphene structures is a very promising method to improve the separation of CO2 from mixtures with CH4 and N2. The separation properties of the analysed materi...

Mechanical properties of graphene nanoribbons.

Herein, we investigate the structural, electronic and mechanical properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the presence of stress by applying density functional theory within the GGA-PBE (generalized gradient approximation-Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof) approximation. The uniaxial stress is applied along the periodic direction, allowing a unitary deformation in the range of ± 0.02%. The mechanical ...

Ultrathin graphitic structures and carbon nanotubes in a purified synthetic graphite.

A new class of carbon structure is reported, which consists of microscale graphitic shells bounded by curved and faceted planes containing two to five layers. These structures were originally found in a commercial graphite produced by the Acheson process, followed by a purification treatment. The particles, which could be several hundreds of nanometres in size, were frequently decorated with na...
